WCTHS Athletic Complex July 2010
The Woodward Athletic Complex
In 2006 Cincinnati Public Schools opened the beautiful new Woodward Career Technical High School. Plans, which began several years earlier, included a state of the art football, track, and baseball athletic complex. This facility was to be the district’s competitive track arena. Because the old Woodward building had to be used for temporary space for another school, building the athletic complex was delayed four years. This Fundraising Campaign will benefit students, parents and the community. Now the original plan requires an additional $610,000. Unless the community can raise the dollars by July 16th, the architectural drawings will be finalized and bids set with the following results:
Seating Capacity:
The original plan was for 1,000 seats in the football/track stadium with bleachers on both sides of the stadium. The current plan is 600 seats on only one side of the stadium. Most varsity games will not be able to be held at the Woodward field because of insufficient seating. This means holding varsity games at the Taft Field on Thursday evenings and loosing parents and community attendance. Friday night football is the American tradition. We need 1,000 seats. The cost is $80,000.
Competitive Track:
The original plan included eight track lanes which are required for competitive track meets. The current plan, unless we help, is six lanes. Loss of track meets means loss of revenue. The cost is $50,000.
Locker Room, Concessions, and Public Restrooms:
The original plan called for a 7,000 square feet structure to house locker rooms for home and visiting teams, equipment, public restrooms, training room, and concessions. This is what is needed to adequately accommodate these needs. This building has been reduced to 3,500 square feet. Restoring this structure to its original size is essential. The cost is $300,000.
Baseball field, Dugouts and Fencing:
The baseball field will have a dirt infield, no seating, and no dugouts. This provides seating problems for parents, the community, visiting teams, and community league spectators. A dirt infield will not prepare youth to successfully compete on grass infields on away games. We need to return grass to the field, add seating, and create dugouts to the baseball field. The cost is $50,000.
Score Board, Press Box and Walkway:
The size of the announcer/press/video/scout box has been cut in half. The two sided scoreboard has been eliminated, and the walkway from the school parking lot to the stadium and ball fields have been eliminated. This is not what was originally believed to be needed to adequately accommodate Woodward’s needs. The cost is $130,000.
